UK Zionist Federation urges ‘Minute for Munich’ on Friday
THE TIMES OF ISRAEL | 26 JUILLET 2012

Because the International Olympic Committee has refused to hold a minute’s silence during the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics on Friday, in tribute to the 11 Israeli team members murdered in the 1972 Munich massacre, the Zionist Federation UK has launched its own Minute For Munich event. It is encouraging people to take a minute of silence at 11 a.m. wherever they are in the world on Friday.

At time of writing over 17,000 people had indicated they were “attending” the event via its Facebook page; more than 130,000 have been invited.

The Zionist Federation will be holding a memorial ceremony at the Israeli Embassy, which it plans to broadcast via live stream.

The campaign has been run alongside a petition started by widows Ankie Spitzer and Ilana Romano, which attracted over 100,000 signatories and was presented to IOC President Jacques Rogge on Wednesday.

Minute For Munich has been endorsed by such institutions as Hillel Russia, Aliyah Chicago, American Zionist Movement, European Jewish Parliament and the World Union of Jewish Students.
